I don't know where to begin. there is just so much to say on how far I have come. I want to be able to share this with you as I go to make you feel safe here and understand that it is okay to start this course even if you feel like it is not for you.
I feel nervous, excited and anxious but Im pretty sure many students feel this way when it comes to university and doing things on your own.
I feel proud that I have come this far! knowing I started without any basic knowledge of design and actually putting myself into a foundation course for fashion and design and accomplishing into getting my way through to first year was absolutely amazing!. I never knew time went so fast and I completed all that and faced all those challenges. I have learnt so much during my foundation year and my first year. not only with the course I study but with being able to connect with different people from my course. being able to socialise and explore from different cultures and ambitions was really a big eye opener.
My grandma always used to sew clothes on Srilanka. she has the really old sewing machine which you had to control with a pedal and it was all manual. I used to sit there just watching her stitch clothes and I always wondered how on earth she knew what she was doing. I was always a curious little girl who just needed to know how things worked from raw, so I just took scraps of fabric and tested the machine out myself and the needle literally went through my finger!! I know OUCH!. I was a little scared to use it after but then growing up I taught myself the basic through YouTube! but guess what it happened to me again during my first year. whenever I messed up I felt happy I tried! and its nothing to feel bad about.
As I am in second year now studying design and accessories at the Jimmy Choo Academy (JCA), I know I have to put in my work. not for everyone else but for me. I know I have a lot of responsibilities and a lot of work to catch up on but I think of this as an amazing journey. This is why I want to share my reality with you and make you feel comfortable and safe here.
What a heartfelt read! There’s nothing more motivating than seeing someone chase their goals. This is fantastic for individulas who are thinking about starting a fashion degree. Good luck on your journey! 💗

This has been a beautiful read Maheshi! It‘s so wholesome to hear you share the same love for textiles as your grandma. I can’t wait to read the rest of your journey and I wish you all the best in fashion 💕
