Africa Fashion V&A

maheshipw

I attended a African fashion exhibition that took place in South Kensington. and let me tell you it was Amazing!. Im not very familiar with Africa fashion but it was so interesting just learning about it. The exhibition was beautifully presented. What I realised was that the fashion exhibition featured a whole collection of clothing, fabrics, textiles, sketches, catwalk footage that celebrates African fashion. Many of the clothing came from the collections of African designers from the middle of the 20th century.

Now let me tell you, I was so interested with these. I instantly remembered back home on how people back in Srilanka dress. It was very much like Batik sarongs with a blouse worn on top. This is honestly how my grandparents dress now! I was so invested with the patterns in their garments which was so nice. I always loved Batik as it comes very widely from back in Srilanka too. The fabric frequently contains woven plaid or checked patterns, or as I mentioned it could also be dyed with batik to give it a vibrant colour which in this exhibition had so much different tones. nowadays, modern sarongs often include patterns that feature animals or plants. Srilanka batik prints are more of plants or elephants. many women wear batik print sprees to work which has vibrant colours such as orange or pink etc.

Now if you don't know how batik is made let me tell you, In order to create batik, specific design elements are blocked out by hot wax, a dye is then put on top and the wax covered areas resist the dye and retain their original colour. How cool!

Lafalaise Dion

This was so beautiful. the usage of cowrie shells which are commonly used in Africa to create jewellery and hair accessories the Cote d'lvoire jewellery designer is referred to as the "queen of cowrie". In the music video of Beyonce, she wore a Lafalaise Dion cowrie shell face mask.

Adele Dejak

The designer, who was born in Nigeria, creates handcrafted, opulent items that are distinctly African. Dejak completed her studies in the Uk before moving to Kenya and laughing her accessory line.
